Cheap Holidays > Browse Guides > Australia > Port Douglas

Located in Far North Queensland, around 70km from Cairns lies the picturesque Port Douglas. Staying here is a better option than Cairns because the town is very close to the Great Barrier Reef and the Kuranda Rainforest. It also has many fabulous beaches, seafood restaurants and golf courses. There are also many festivals and events celebrated in the surrounding regions of Port Douglas. The restaurants are slightly upscale but still reasonably priced.

Port Douglas is rapidly growing in tourism as there are many beautiful places to explore and enjoy there. However, this place does not have the ‘party atmosphere’ of Cairns yet it has charm of its own as a holiday destination.

Your Port Douglas guide will easily find cheap accommodations and hotels for you so you can enjoy your holiday without worrying about anything.

Nature lovers can explore 1200 square kilometer of rainforest at nearby Daintree. You will find hiking tracks, hidden beaches and many species of the amazing wildlife that are left to flourish, untouched by mankind. In fact, it has the honor of being UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Four Mile Beach, the main beach of Port Douglas has evaded tourist development and has retained its long luscious sandy stretch. The crystal water is always a temptation but don’t swim there during stinger season.

When you go back to town, you can visit interesting sites like the Courthouse Museum and Shipwreck Museum. On a Sunday you can drop by in the famous Sunday Port Douglas Craft Markets where you will find amazing arts and crafts items. You can also pick up locally made souvenirs for your family and friends.

No holiday would be complete without visiting some local events and festivals. Port Douglas has some great local festivals and events that you should check out. For example, in February the Reed and Reef Carnival is hosted. It is a ten day extravaganza, not only held in Port Douglas but also in Daintree, Mossam and Cape Tribulation. The main theme of the carnival is the beautiful reef and rainforest. In additions there are various games, stalls, displays and fun competitions, which a carnival would be incomplete without.

Then there is the Port Douglas Carnival held on May. This carnival is different because it combines Port Douglas sporting events with music, arts and cultural events. The main attraction of the event is the six-day regatta, where you can see magnificent ships leaving the port. The Carnival has been celebrated for many years and has grown from a small street fiesta to a community-wide event.

There are many fabulous restaurants, located in Port Douglas. Like On the Inlet, where you will find delicious prawns and bubbly champagne. The restaurant is build over the water of the Dickinson Inlet so you get to enjoy breath-taking view with your food.

If you are not in the mood for prawns then drop by in Macrossan Street. You will definitely find some thing to eat here of your taste because it has many fine dining options. There are also several café bars in town if you are in the mood to eat something light.

In short, Port Douglas is the perfect holiday for anybody because it fulfills all your needs. Just ask your Port Douglas traveler guide to take you to all these hotspots.
